C-Cat Flight Instructor Rating
Cost $26,450
Becoming a flight instructor is both a rewarding and challenging endeavour. The HCAT C-Cat Flight Instructor course will refine your flight handling skills and broaden your aviation knowledge. This advanced course will train you in the successful methods required to prepare and give systematic student briefings on the ground and accurate, effectual lessons in the air. There is no rigid course timetable, students learn at their own pace and in accordance with their individual commitment needs.
Requirements
- Hold a current CPL (Helicopter)
- Hold a valid Class 1 medical
- 200 hours total, 150 of which are Pilot in Command
- 7 hours instrument time including at least 5 hours dual instrument instruction
- 40 hours cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command
- Mountainous terrain: 10 hours pilot-in-command in helicopters in mountainous terrain.
- Sling loads: 10 hours pilot-in-command in helicopters carrying sling loads.
As part of the Flight Instructor course you will receive 25 hours of dual flight instruction from one of our skilled instructors, attend a 2 day Instructional Techniques course and receive then practise student ground briefings at our training facilities at Ardmore.

Instrument Rating
An instrument rating is an additional qualification that allows a pilot to operate safely in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (inside cloud) by reference solely to flight instruments (IFR)
The qualification consists of three theory exams;
- IFR Law
- IFR Navigation Aids
- IFR Navigation
Requirements
- 50 hours of VFR cross-country navigation flight time as pilot-in-command, of which not less than 10 hours are in the appropriate category of aircraft; and
- 10 hours dual instrument cross-country flight time under an IFR flight plan; and
- 40 hours instrument time; and
- 20 hours instrument flight time of which at least 10 hours are dual instruction
