Commercial Pilots Licence

Cost $90,000 (includes PPL Practical Course)

A CPL is a professional licence which allows the holder to be employed (paid) as a Commercial Pilot. Helicopter pilots can be employed with businesses involved in Tourism, Forestry, Agriculture, Oil, gas and mineral exploration, Rescue Operations and Instructors at Flight Schools.

HCAT operates a Part 135 Commercial Operation from the Ardmore base. HCAT students therefore have the added advantage of exposure to the daily operations of a Commercial Helicopter company and can assist with ground operations once they are certified as Ground Crew.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a current NZ Class 1 Medical
  • Hold a valid NZ Private Pilots Licence
  • Meet the CAA Fit and Proper person status requirements plus criminal record and offence histories from the Ministry of Justice and Land Transport NZ
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must have achieved IELTS 6.0 or equivalent and passed the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Aviation English Proficiency Test

Theory and Practical

Ground Theory aspects

CPL examinations test student knowledge of the following 6 aviation subjects:

  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Air Law
  • Human Factors
  • General Aircraft Technical Knowledge
  • Principals of Flight and Aircraft Performance

Practical Aspect

Minimum of 150 hours flight experience in the following:

  • 35 hours dual instruction
  • 35 hours Pilot in Command
  • 10 hours Sling load Flight training
  • 5 hours Dual navigation
  • 10 hours mountainous terrain experience
  • 20 hours cross country navigation
